RESUMEN

The social outbreak that occurred in Chile in October 2019, added to the COVID-19 pandemic, has made visible and exacerbated inequities of all kinds in the country (health, work, housing, education etc). This has resulted in the activation of various social and community processes that try to reverse situations of injustice and also to subvert the economic and social logic that has led us to this situation. In this scenario, the question arises, what can Chilean Community Psychology contribute to this crisis? An attempt is made to answer this question in this chapter, which addresses, from an integrated perspective, the various alternatives that our discipline has to contribute to this process of social transformation.

This study aimed to assess the impact of COVID-19 on recovery housing (RH), an important resource for individuals in recovery from substance use disorder (SUD). A cross-sectional survey was disseminated electronically between June and July of 2020 to RH owners and operators affiliated with Oxford House or the National Alliance of Recovery Residences nationwide. The survey intended to develop an understanding of the impact of COVID-19 on RH in terms of (a) resident housing access, (b) mitigation strategies to reduce COVID-19 spread, (c) RH financials, and (d) health and well-being of residents and staff. Impacts were assessed among all houses in the sample and then by rurality of RH location (rural vs. nonrural). Among 1,419 respondents, only 4.6% reported positive COVID-19 cases, and 85% reported having implemented centers for disease control-recommended policies. More than half (59%) reported financial impacts, and close to half (49%) reported COVID-19 had "a lot of impact" on residents attending meetings. Rural RH represented only 9% of respondents and a greater fraction of rural RH respondents reported spending more on all COVID-19 expense categories compared to nonrural RH respondents. Compared to nonrural RH, rural RH were significantly more likely to report having a process for evaluating COVID-19 (p = .007), wearing masks (p = .047), taking temperatures (p = .042), and spending more on food due to COVID-19 (p = .015). With SUD rates and the associated morbidity and mortality from SUD continuing to rise, addressing the financial viability of RH, an important resource supporting individuals in recovery is crucial. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved) Impact Statement This study suggests that recovery housing, an important resource for individuals seeking or in recovery from a substance use disorder (SUD), is proactive in ensuring resident safety during national emergencies such as COVID-19. The most prominent impacts found in this study were financial (for the recovery home) and residents' ability to attend mutual aid recovery support meetings.

Alternate :This article addresses socio-environmental conflicts arising from the construction of port complexes in the state of Pará from 03 (communities) parameters of analysis - threats to traditional communities, agents involved and forms of complex resistance. Due to the new coronavirus (SARS-COV-2) pandemic, the methodological procedures were redefined, using the Systematic Literature Review (RSL) technique combined with documentary research, on-site observation and interviews carried out in the community of Guajará de research Beja, municipality of Abaetetuba, one of the locus of the research. The application of the RSL Research Protocol/PP resulted in 10 (ten) selected studies which, after being added to the other methodological procedures, indicating that as natural/locational resources, especially for the analysis of port complexes in the state of Pará, companies socio-environmental producers between local agents for audiences and traditional communities in the Amazon.

RESUMEN

PurposeThis study is aimed at developing an understanding of the consequences of the pandemic on families' socioeconomic resilience, and the strategies adopted by the families in overcoming social vulnerabilities amid uncertainty.Design/methodology/approachThe materials for this study consist of semi-structured interviews with 21 families spread across the South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Families in the study represent four different income levels, namely very high, high, middle and low, and who also work in the informal sector. Each family has at least 1 or more members who fall into the vulnerable category (children, the elderly, people with disabilities unemployed or having potential economic vulnerability).FindingsTwo main findings are outlined. Regardless of their socioeconomic status, many of the families analyzed adopted similar strategies to remain resilient. Among the strategies are classifying the urgency of purchasing consumer goods based on financial capacity rather than needs, leveraging digital economic opportunities as alternative sources of income, utilizing more extensive informal networks and going into debt. Another interesting finding shows that the pandemic, to some extent, has saved poor families from social insecurity. This is supported by evidence showing that social distancing measures during the pandemic have reduced the intensity of sociocultural activities, which require invited community members to contribute financially. The reduction of sociocultural activities in the community has provided more potential savings for the poor.Research limitations/implicationsIn this study, informants who provided information about their family conditions represent a major segment of the workforce and tend to be technologically savvy and younger, due to the use of Zoom as a platform for conducting interviews. Therefore, there may be a bias in the results. Another limitation is that since the interviewees were recommended by our social network in the fields, there is a risk of a distorted selection of participants.Originality/valueThis study offers insights that are critical in helping to analyze family patterns in developing countries in mitigating the risks and uncertainties caused by COVID-19. In addition, the literature on social policy and development could benefit from further research on COVID-19 as an alternative driver to identify mechanisms that could bring about change that would result in "security.” Critical questions and limitations of this study are presented at the end of the paper to be responded to as future research agenda.

RESUMEN

Confronting gender-based violence is a key area of concern and one that calls for urgent action. These debates have become particularly relevant in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and the unveiling of underlying inequalities. Amongst the many unintended consequences of the pandemic lies the increased risk of domestic violence for vulnerable women who have been required to self-isolate. There is increasing evidence that we are facing more than one pandemic with quite worrying and widespread problems in global systems, whether they relate to public health or to human rights. As academics, we can contribute by theorizing with intersectionalities, translating research into practice, engaging with our local communities and creating non-stigmatized environment. But most of all, we can advocate for victims.

This article aims to analyze the impact of pandemic the new coronavirus of Covid-19 on the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly the situation of transvestites and transgender women. With this in mind, this text advocates a secondary analysis in one research aimed at the national LGBTQIA+ population and another research aimed at transvestites and transgender women in the city of São Paulo, as well as the bibliographical review of the proposed. To this end, we use the categories that permeate and go beyond gender and include human diversity, taking into account the social relationships of gender, race and social class, as well as those that determine the changes in the world of work in the context of "pandemic capitalism”.

The aim of this article is to discuss the communication relationships established in the context of food delivery work mediated by digital platforms, specifically considering the case of the iFood company in Brazil. It is a proposal that seeks to reflect how the before-mentioned company chooses, in the design and interface of its app, for a limited interaction with the workers who carry out the delivery work. It can be said that, in this sense, there is an information asymmetry in the relationships between the digital platform company and the so-called "delivery riders”, since the company has a monopoly of information in the work process managed and algorithmically controlled by itself. The discussion presented in this article is based on the results of an empirical research carried out with workers who used the iFood company's delivery app in the southern Brazil, in 2020, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alternate :The present study thematizes racism in class society and aims to analyze the consequences of racial inequalities in the covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, the Historical-Dialectical Materialism method and a qualitative approach were used. In this way, a bibliographic and documentary research was carried out, in addition to a mapping work based on secondary data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) of 2019, Atlas of Violence of 2020 made by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA) and the Special Bulletin 20 November 2021 of the Inter-union Department of Statistics and Socioeconomic Studies (DIEESE) to dialogue with the reality of Afro-Brazilians in a pandemic scenario. From the results of the study, we highlight that racism has been a structuring axis of Brazilian society even in a post-abolitionist phase;that the Racial Question has been one of the expressions of the Social Question in the society of Capital, in such a way that inequalities are connected in contemporaneity;and, that the pandemic accentuated racial inequalities in Brazil.

RESUMEN

"Young People, Violence and Strategic Interventions in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA)" brings together data and case studies from a range of SSA countries. While the findings are diverse, a set of themes predominate: they reveal that violence, embedded in everyday lived realities, is a complex and urgent issue that should be comprehensively probed. While moments of political and xenophobic violence are reflected upon, critical attention is firmly on young women and their grappling with sexual and gender-based violence. The COVID lens has magnified micro-struggles and long-standing structural problems showing how inequities and disadvantages have created an infrastructure through which violence has been exacerbated. There is also a focus on masculinities constructed by oppressive histories, social and economic crises, and state disregard, but with the message that marginality should not be reified, nor the gendered practices of young men oversimplified. In all the chapters, contextual specificities and insightful case studies offer thoughts and arguments about the ways in which violence manifests, what interventionist strategies are compelling, and how young people's proactive involvement in interventions could begin to address the problem of violence.

Alternate :This article aims to discuss recent aspects of Brazilian social assistance policy, considering the incidence of the radicalization of the neoliberal project on its services and the characteristics of its intervention in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. We chose as a central analysis theme the relationship between the aforementioned policy and the management of the most precarious and impoverished workforce, which in general have made up the target audience of this field of social protection. Based on the foundations of the Marxist critique of social policy, the approach to social assistance seeks to reveal the contradictions inherent in this social security policy, questioning the main elements of the tightening of fiscal adjustment in Brazil. These reflections solidify the bases for the analysis about the condition of this policy in the management of the most impoverished workforce from the determinations of the Covid-19 pandemic. The research, of a qualitative nature, is based on a literature review and analysis of empirical data from primary and secondary sources.

Alternate :This study aims to analyze the impacts of the crisis associated with the Covid-19 pandemic on the Brazilian labor market until the end of 2020. Therefore, data from PNAD Contínua are analyzed in order to identify the behavior of the labor force, the main characteristics of the jobs lost and the impacts on labor income in that period. The national labor market was strongly hit from March 2020, with a historical slump in the level of occupation. The most affected workers were those who were in informal and more flexible occupations, with a lower degree of social protection. With the contraction of the employed population and the number of hours worked, there was an intense fall in labor income, especially in the lowest salary ranges. As a result, the pandemic may have triggered the worst crisis in the history of the Brazilian labor market, with lasting impacts on employment and income levels.

Alternate :32 million Brazilians suffered from hunger in the 1990s. To solve this problem, the implementation of public policies to promote family farming in the country was one of the most effective actions. Since 2015, the resources allocated to such policies have drastically reduced, generating discontinuity in the supply of food to entities and users of the programs, losses in the income of farmers and food insecurity, situations aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the concepts of food security, family farming and public policies, this article aims to understand the repercussions of the divestment of public policies and the pandemic in the daily lives of family farmers in Barbalha-CE. We continued with the examination of public documents, interviews, observations and daily conversations with female farmers, whose data were understood from the analysis of discursive practices. The results point out the difficulties of the workers in accessing public services, producing, marketing and guaranteeing the food security of their families.

Alternate :This article aims it is contribute the debate on food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic, to report on the social extension initiative of the Solidarity Agroecological Planting (PAS) of the Federal University of Santa Catarina and the consequent impact on the access and distribution of organic food in Florianopolis, SC, Brazil. In the context of the health crisis, with more than 645,000 deaths from Covid-19 in Brazil, allied to the economic crisis, social inequalities were accentuated that deepened the hunger scenario in the country. The current pandemic scenario indicates a unique moment for our society to rethink the global right to access to healthy food and on which model of agriculture it is expected to promote. Agroecological agriculture is a viable and necessary model for the dignified and conscious production of food, providing mechanisms for the promotion Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security, through the democratization of access to healthy and pesticide-free food.

Alternate :This article systematizes the actions of social assistants associated to a multi-professional residency course in family health, undertaken within the Primary Healthcare System, during the new coronavirus pandemic, in a context of reorganization of healthcare services and the labor of professionals in the sector. Its objective is to contribute to reflections about the technical-operative dimension of the profession, addressing aspects of work by the Expanded Family Healthcare Nucleus in this exceptional period. The systematization was conducted through registers in field diaries prepared by the professionals from March to September 2020. The main results indicate that the sanitary crisis deepened social inequalities, requiring predominantly educational professional actions aimed at the population's access to social rights and services that support better living conditions, considering changes provoked by the pandemic. The reorganization required in the collective work process in healthcare services involved alterations in the flows of access to social services and rights. This means that, in the period analyzed, there was a predominance of professional demands related to administration and planning, that involved the elaboration of informative materials to support educational actions, the promotion of pertinent information to the population that uses Brazil's federal public single healthcare system, and providing instructions to multi-professional teams about social benefits available to mitigate the effects of the pandemic. The socio-educational actions aimed at mobilization and political-organizational assistance were essential to realizing access to collective practices of social control focused on the universal right to healthcare.

RESUMEN

PurposeIn today's challenging world, achieving professional commitment among healthcare workers is becoming the need of time. Drawing on self-determination theory, the current study examines how and under which boundary conditions perceived organizational support affects professional commitment.Design/methodology/approachData was collected from doctors and nurses employed in public and private sector hospitals by employing a split-questionnaire design.FindingsThe authors' study findings demonstrate that perceived organizational support has a positive and indirect effect on the professional commitment of nurses and doctors via mediating the role of subjective well-being. The authors also found that these findings depend on healthcare workers' burnout levels. The positive relationship between perceived organizational support and subjective well-being is attenuated by burnout syndrome.Practical implicationsThe current study poses implications for policymakers and administrators of healthcare institutions as well as to develop a supportive culture to evoke more professional commitment among healthcare workers. Implications for nursing managers and policymakers are discussed in light of the study findings.Originality/valueHealthcare institutions are increasingly paying attention to raising the professional commitment of their workforce, especially in the wake of a crisis like the COVID-19 outbreak. The current study will add to the body of literature on nursing management, healthcare studies and organizational psychology in the South Asian context by explaining the relationship between POS and professional commitment, drawing on self-determination theory.

Alternate :The following manuscript results from the transcription — albeit with some adaptations — of the lecture given by Professor José Paulo Netto, on September 29, 2020. The text was reviewed by the speaker himself, who, after careful reading, approved it for publication. The aforementioned event was organized by the Postgraduate Program in Social Work, at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. Since we were already facing the global health crisis resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, the lecture was held in a Webinar format and coordinated by me. During the occasion, Professor José Paulo Netto addressed the theme entitled Marxism and Social Work: reflections on research, knowledge production, and the challenges of social workers' practice. As we pointed out at the time, Professor José Paulo Netto has undeniable charisma and widely acknowledged intellectual competence. The theme was tackled by one of the most important Marxists in Brazil today. His contributions surpass the boundaries of Social Work, both Brazilian and Latin American, Caribbean and European. José Paulo Netto has enriched Marxist social theory in general and, therefore, he also has an impact on other areas of knowledge, which further strengthens the Brazilian Social Work, since he is a representative of this category. Those who know him are aware that his intellectual career is accomp nied by a life of political militancy, in the context of anti-capitalist struggles. Not by chance, José Paulo Netto has received the title of being a restless Marxist, not only for his efforts in the academic field, but also for his capacity to challenge and shed light on the agendas and struggles of the working class. This lecture by José Paulo Netto which now is brought to the general public in the form of a written piece, published in this issue of Katálysis Journal, was held right before the release of what has already been recognized as one of his most important intellectual works. His book Marx: a biography, which was released in late 2020 and fulfilled one the author's teenage dream. This dream come true, perhaps more than he could have imagined, has gained social force to the extent that it has raised in scholars of Marxism, beginners or not, relevant questions about our historical time from the work and life of Karl Marx, which highlights the relevance of his thought to guide the struggles for human emancipation.

The article develops the hypothesis that there's an intimate relationship between the interests of capital and education, as a strategy in the construction of individuals who will compete in a scarce, precarious and unstable labor market. It analyzes documents from multilateral organizations, their ideological mechanisms and strategies used with the intention of building consensus on the need for a "new” educational project, in which there is a slow and gradual replacement of classroom teaching, via hybrid systems. The most concrete, complete and complex change in teaching/education is underway: it's virtualization or digitalization, which has been projected since the Bologna reform (1999). We conclude that capital, in it's search for valorization, found strategies and tactics in the pandemic for the continuity and intensification of the use of digital technologies in education, transforming it into distance learning and imposing a new educational project. This project found an unprecedented opportunity and justification: Covid-19.

Alternate :This article aims to reflect on the relationship between the environmental issue, structural crisis of capitalism and the new Coronavirus pandemic. We understand in this work that the pandemic of the new Coronavirus that generates the disease named Covid-19 is organically related to the crisis of capitalism, as a result of the accumulation process greedily growing capitalist that needs the inexhaustible exploitation of human resources and natural, making them commodities. This double exploration at a galloping pace, inherent to sociometabolic order of the capital, constitute fundamental elements for the current scenario of world crisis. For such reflection, we walk under the perspective of the dialectical-critical method of Marx, using bibliographic and documentary research as a methodology. We divided the work into two central sections: the first discusses the environmental issue and the order sociometabolic of capitalism, relation of accumulation and destructiveness;the second analyzes the relationship between the three perspectives of the discussion: the crisis of capitalism, the pandemic and the environmental issue.
